Little girl visiting shelter heartbroken over returned dog didn’t want to leave until ‘Dori was safe’

At the Fulton County Animal Shelter in Atlanta, Georgia, a five-year-old cuddle pup named Dori had just been returned to the shelter after two days, because she didn’t get along with the owner’s pet rabbit. Because the shelter is so short on space, Dori is likely to be placed on the euthanasia list any day now.

On Sunday. eight-year-old Maya and her mom stopped by the shelter to see a few of the dogs just before heading out to go school shopping. Maya’s heart broke:

“I’m not leaving until she’s safe.”

“Maya, we have to go. We were just stopping by to see a few dogs before getting school supplies.”

“Dori needs me. Every time I cry about no one wanting her, she is pawing at me.”

Dori hasn’t had a charmed life in her past, yet her love for humans and wanting to be part of a family has always remained constant. According to the shelter, she was found as a stray – little more than skin and bones. She had recently given birth to a litter of puppies, but when she was found, she had no puppies. She had been struggling to keep herself alive on the streets, and now she has to do it again. Instead, this time, it’s in a shelter.

Dori needs us. Please don’t let today be her last day.

LOVES humans. Dog friendly. Cat possible. SWEETEST GIRL. Calm demeanor. Loves to cuddle.

Dori’s Adoption Information:

At five-years old and 45 pounds Dori is a gentle, affectionate girl who wants nothing more than to be close to her person. She’s the ultimate cuddlebug—sweet, loving, and happiest when snuggled up right beside you. Dori may be underweight and showing signs of past neglect, but her spirit shines through with every tail wag and soft nuzzle.

She walks politely on leash, knows commands like “sit,” “come,” and “no,” and is very treat-motivated—especially if there’s a cuddle reward after! She’s easy to handle, rides well in the car, and has been friendly when greeting other dogs through the fence, showing interest with a loose, waggy tail.

Dori opens up quickly and bonds hard—she’s a velcro dog in the best way. She’s gentle with treats, enjoys toys, and is just an all-around happy, easygoing sweetheart. If you’re looking for a soft, snuggly soul who will be your loyal little shadow, Dori might just be your perfect match.

*Additional notes, Dori seems to be both dog & cat friendly but has not been formally tested.

Anyone interested in adopting or fostering Dori should go down to Fulton County Animal Services at 1251 Fulton Industrial Blvd NW, Atlanta, GA 30336 IMMEDIATELY, don’t email or call.

Please share Dori’s plight with approved rescues, friends, family and social media contacts. Sharing saves lives.
