German shepherd ‘Blossom’ overwhelmed in shelter and scheduled to lose her life

In New York City, a gentle German shepherd feeling overwhelmed and lost in the chaos of an overcrowded shelter is scheduled to be humanely euthanized.

German shepherds do not do well confined in shelter situations. They are devoted to their families and demand the freedom to explore, run, jump and join in family activities. They are smart, loyal and beautiful.

No one knows why Blossom was found as a stray, but at eight years of age, she should be stretching out and yawning on a soft bed in a home where she is loved. There’s no reason anyone can figure out why she’s at the shelter.

Blossom has made friends with some of the staff members who come over to greet her and take her for walks. While with them, she is attentive and curious; where could she be going she seems to be asking and hopefully someone would be taking her home finally. Sadly, at this point, Blossom won’t have that happy ending.

We all know what is in store for this poor girl if a family doesn’t step up to save her life, but no one has the heart to tell her, even if they could.

The shelter has issued an “at risk” memo which includes:

“Blossom is at risk due to behavior reasons. Blossom arrived at MACC as a stray with no known history. Blossom has been observed to be highly fearful while in care. She is noted to hard bark, lunge, snap and muzzle punch the kennel door when handlers approach. During intake, Blossom was also observed to quickly escalate to hard barking and snapping. Recently, Blossom has warmed up to select handlers and has been allowing handling. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced, adult-only home. Medically, Blossom is overweight and has CIRDC.”

Blossom’s video while on a walk with a friend:

On Tuesday, Blossom behaved like an angel. Here’s what her handler posted:

“06/02/26: Blossom is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She begins barking and vocalizing while pawing at the kennel door, she allows leashing and quickly pulls out of kennel out to the street for her walk. Outside she pulls forward moderately, she passes people on the street without issue and reacts similarly with dogs. Blossom stops to sniff occasionally and walks for a while with handler, approaching handler and soliciting social interaction with handler. She lays her head on handler and licks them gently, after walking for a while she is brought back inside. Handler is able to clip her leash and she is returned to kennel without issue.”

Blossom arrived at the shelter on May 21 and reported to have been fearful and defensive. As she became accustomed to her surroundings (and who could blame her for being so defensive), she has become much more cooperative.

The shelter recommends placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
