In Michigan City, Indiana, two zookeepers were hospitalized following a reported wolf attack Wednesday, June 3, at the Washington Park Zoo.

According to reports from the Michigan City Police Department and the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department, a wolf had died on June 2 from natural causes. After the wolf’s death, an “incident” occurred with the other wolves and two members of the staff.
The zookeepers were reportedly attacked by two of the wolves while inside the exhibit at the zoo. The Michigan City Fire Department treated a woman who escaped from the enclosure with “severe injuries” which included multiple bite wounds to her neck and arms. The other zookeeper was found inside the enclosure with a bite wound to her forearm.

Rescue personnel were careful to get the second zookeeper out of the enclosure with the aid of a ladder.
Officials said all individuals involved in the incident are in stable condition. The other wolves were not injured.
The zoo remained open on Wednesday, but the main wolf exhibit was closed while staff monitored the animals and continued to assess the situation.
The zoo posted the following statement on their Facebook page.
