At the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage hotel in California, a five-star hotel redirected guests to a different entrance door after a hummingbird build her small nest in the door handle.

The staff posted a sign that read “Nature in Progress” and explained the reason for the door detour. It wasn’t long before online readers smiled and commented on the posted video and photos and sent their well wishes to the small family getting ready to hatch. The eggs typically hatch in about two weeks.
The decision was also aligned with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which makes it illegal to destroy, interfere or relocate active nests of most native birds – hummingbirds are on the list.

These tiny birds are well known for their ability to hover and fly backward by the power of their wings that can beat 80 times per second creating the “hum” we hear. They feed on nectar from flowers and insects and are found anywhere from Alaska to South America. They have the lifespan of three to five years.
If you have ever wanted to attract hummingbirds in your yard, hang feeders with sugar water and raise plants with flowers that attract them. Don’t forget to leave a few dead branches for them to perch on.
Hummingbirds are known to abandon their nests if disturbed.
