Horrifying discovery of 2 puppies with severe wounds to their backs

In the southeastern area of North Carolina, two puppies, estimated to be less than ten weeks old, were found by Animal Control and brought into the county shelter on Thursday. Jack and Jill 4

When A Shelter Friend, was called to help, volunteers were told the puppies suffered from extensive skin missing on their backs; no one knows for sure how such egregious injuries could have happened, however if not rescued, the county shelter would have been forced to humanely euthanize the pups. Instead, a Shelter Friend immediately went into action and rushed the puppies to their veterinarian. Jack and jill2

As a Shelter Friend acts as a liaison between the county shelter and rescue groups nationwide by coordinating rescue efforts and assisting with the logistics, including veterinary care and transportation, they called upon the help of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC later that afternoon.

According to Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, she stated there had been a report that someone had poured burning oil on the puppies, dubbed Jack and Jill, to “help” them.

“They were shaking from the pain and licking each other’s backs in an attempt to comfort each other,” Jackie sadly explained. “No living being should be treated so cruelly and with such disregard for life!”

The puppies are expected to be flown to New York City on Friday by volunteers from Pilots N’Paws. They will immediately be transported to a specialty veterinarian and receive the best of care. Thank you in advance for helping.

Deformity: Dog’s legs go up, instead of down

A young golden retriever named “Rexi,” is unlike most any dog anyone has ever seen. The one-year-old dog has two front legs that go up, instead of down. Rexi belongs to James Cassity and Rachael Woertink, of Victorville, California.

According to Friday’s ABC 7 News, the couple first noticed that Rexi was different when the pup was just 10-weeks-old. Rexi was taken to a veterinarian who determined that the pup was suffering from a neurological problem…the couple was advised that they might want to consider having their puppy euthanized.

Fortunately for Rexi, her owners feel like she is family and they could not bear the thought of having her killed. Rexi currently has a wheelchair, but it flips over if a wheel hits a rock.

Though Rexi has learned to get around quite well on her own, Woertink and Cassity hope to find a better option for her…something that increases her mobility without the risk of injury.

In an effort to find the best solution, the couple created a GoFundMe fundraiser which reads, “Rexi has no use of her front legs. We would like some help to make her mobile again or better yet fix her legs if possible. We love her very much and just want the best for her.”

Many people have offered helpful suggestions on the fundraiser site, and nearly $5,000 has been raised to help get Rexi the help that she needs. Until a good solution is found, the couple will continue to enjoy their unique pup, and do what they can to keep her happy, and healthy. Cassity told ABC 7, “It wasn’t her fault she was born that way, so just trying to find something to fix her,”

Boxer adopts orphaned bird after it fell out of its nest

In Kent, England, a woman’s rather adorable but goofy Boxer has developed a bond with an orphaned bird that fell out of tree in the garden of his home. rusty the gentle giant cover

On a Facebook page called Rusty the Gentle Giant, the dog’s owner Jurgita Peciulaityte, recounts the bond the bird named “Birdie” and Rusty have forged together. The pair have become inseparable since the day Rusty found the tiny bird while Jurgita had been in her woodworking shop.

“I heard him barking excitedly like he had found a cat, and discovered he was looking at this little bird which had fallen out of its nest,” described Jurgita to the KentOnline. “As soon as I approached, the bird opened its beak so I found some earthworms which it gobbled down.”

Although Birdie is too young to fly, it hops onto Rusty’s back when the dog is lying down. And when Rusty stands up to see if Birdie is on his back, the happy-go-lucky pooch goes round and round. Rusty the gentle giant 2

“Rusty is very gentle and caring and doing a great job,” describes Jurgita, “but he is no help with digging for worms. He will be one sad puppy when the birdie flies the nest.”

Sadly all of Birdie’s brothers and sisters had flown away, and there had been no sign of the mother, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem. Day#9 of Birdie’s and Rusty’s friendship included:

“We practice going outside, perching up on different things and a bit more flying 🙂. Hope that Birdie will memorize the route to our porch, and if he needs food after leaving he will find some in there, left special for him. As alway Rusty keeps a close eye on him 🙂 xx”

Puppy thrown away in trash can outside of shelter

This week, an adorable mixed-breed puppy was thrown away in a trash can outside of a Tennessee animal control agency. On July 12, the Springfield Animal Control posted multiple photos of the puppy, along with a request and explanation as to how she was found.

The animal control agency’s post on Facebook reads:

Good afternoon!! This baby need a good loving caring home, I came to work this morning and she was inside the trash can ?????Please help me find a good home for her. I give her a warm bath, she was hungry and thirsty.

The post struck a chord with Facebook followers who expressed sadness and outrage over the way that the puppy was abandoned. Fortunately, there ultimately is a happy “tail” for this adorable pup – on Thursday, the animal control agency announced that the puppy had already been adopted.

According to the Tennessean, social media has been an excellent resource for the shelter – in fact, postings to Facebook are so successful that only sick or extremely aggressive dogs are put down now.

A follow-up call to the person who adopted this pup revealed that things seem to be going well – the adopter repeatedly mentioned that the puppy is very loving.

Bittersweet rescue of a mother dog and her newborn puppies

In the bittersweet story of a very pregnant pup who found herself dumped at a rural southern shelter, her life as well as the lives of her babies, just days from being born seemed slim. And to make matters even worse, the gentle dog, dubbed Sweetie Pie, suffered from an advance case of heartworms. Sweetie pie mom2

Ultimately Sweetie Pie delivered her litter at the shelter, and for three days gave every ounce of energy she could muster nursing and caring for the puppies, despite having been emaciated, abused and very ill. And then Sweetie Pie died from heart failure. The shelter immediately reached out to rescue organizations asking for help for the three-day-old puppies. Rescue Dogs Rock NYC rushed right in. “We were only notified of Sweetie Pie and her story, after she passed away, when her babies were left with no Mom and therefore no lifeline. We stepped in with our bottle feeders ready and waiting and accepted these innocent 3 day old puppies into our rescue to give them a fighting chance at survival and the possibility of a wonderful future,” stated Jackie O’Sullivan, co-founder of the rescue.

The puppies are currently in foster care and are being bottle fed.

We will fight to keep your babies alive,” had been posted to the Facebook page for Rescue Dogs Rock NYC on Thursday evening.

Couple on Pokemon Go outing saves senior dog

The wildly popular Pokemon Go game, which leads people on a scavenger hunt for virtual “wild” Pokémon, led a couple in Royal Oak, Michigan, to a house fire. According to Thursday’s publication of Detroit Free Press, 24-year-old Patrick Awdish, his fiancee Katelyn Zack, 21, saw smoke coming from a house on Cooper Avenue and Grandview Road and realized that the structure was on fire.

The couple phoned 9-1-1 and the prompt response of firefighters brought the blaze under control, and resulted in the rescue of a 10-year-old dog named “Stanley,” who had been alone inside of the house.

The couple had just recently downloaded the Pokemon Go game and if they had not been wandering through the area, the fire may not have been discovered as quickly as it was. Randall Bishop, the owner of the house that caught fire, commented on the unexpected heroes:

“They saved my house. They sure did. This whole Pokemon thing is obviously a positive, in our aspect.”

The fire is believed to have started on a deck, inside of a planter box that was filled with cigarette butts and wood chips.

Dumped at shelter for being ‘too big’ dog’s death sentence awaits at noon

Calling a one hundred and five pound dog “too big” is perhaps understandable, but when it is a St. Bernard and Pit bull mix that has been part of the family for the last five years, how could you? JoJo was surrendered on July 5 to the Brooklyn facility of New York City Animal Care and Control, and his tragic story needs to be told. Early Friday afternoon, through no fault of his own, Jojo is scheduled to be euthanized. JoJo the NYC

Surrendered by a friend of Jojo’s owner, the person provided no information to even help. Every question was answered with the words, “I don’t know it’s my friends dog,” and asked if he could be called later with the answers, the client quickly walked out of the door – Jojo’s future and his life didn’t matter.

During SAFER evaluation, Jojo acted friendly, affectionate and social towards the assessor. Abandoned dog tied up and left in 100+ heat with no food or water for a week

In an isolated area of northeast Oklahoma City, a dog had been left tied to a tree. For a week she suffered in the extreme 100+ degree temperatures with no available food or water. Honey Bear the golden retriever cover

Reyna Silva took regular walks in the same area, and for days she could hear a dog whimpering but couldn’t figure out where the cries originated.

“I felt really responsible because it had been a week since I heard something and did nothing,” Silva told News9.

And on the 4th of July weekend, determined to find where the crying sounds were coming from, Silva went exploring. That’s when she came upon the emaciated dog tethered to a tree with a blue leash; nearly hidden in the tall grass. The Golden retriever mix could barely move. Most likely she had been dumped and intentionally hidden far away from the road to make sure she was never found. That’s when Silva called her friend Scott Doyle for help.

Doyle and Silva named the dog “Honey Bear” because of her amazing disposition and the dog’s constant desire to be cuddled like a teddy bear. Doyle is fostering her and nursing her back to health. As to Honey Bear’s health, her first veterinarian visit showed her to be anemic, 20 pounds underweight and infested with both hook and tapeworms. Not long ago, she had a litter of puppies and had been suffering with a uterus infection.

Any extra funds not needed for Honey Bear will be donated to a local rescue. Once completely recovered, Honey Bear will be eligible for adoption.

Neglected Doberman seized, taken to busy animal control

A neglected Doberman Pinscher was recently removed from his home and taken to a busy Texas animal control agency. On Friday, the volunteer-run Facebook page, Focus on Furever, featured the homeless dog and wrote, “I am an adult male Doberman that was part of a cruelty/confiscate case. I’m a sweet big boy with sores all over my body. I could use some TLC and a good home!”

This neglected dog, whose name is unknown, is being held at the Corpus Christi Animal Services facility – though he does not have a specified “euthanasia” date, he is at risk of being killed and should be considered urgent. Focus on Furever writes, “Many of these animals are due to be euthanized. There is a “Review Date” on the Kennel Card. It is not a euthanasia date. However, if there no room at the kennels all dogs with present review dates will be considered for euthanasia. Whether an animal is scheduled by CCACS to be euthanized will depend on many factors such as health, temperament, adoptability, etc. ”

The adoption fee for this dog is only $25 – the fee includes vaccinations and altering. Please help this dog find his way to a rescue group, or loving home, by sharing his adoption information.

Florida man fights to keep his 47-year-old pizza and chocolate chip eating alligator

In Coconut Grove, Florida, lives a 47-year-old “pet” alligator named Gwendolyn.

According to CbsNews, David Van Buren has had his pet alligator since he was nine years old. Gwendolyn even went to college with David. But now things have changed after a recent complaint, and Florida Fish and Wildlife officials told him that 13-foot Gwendolyn has grown too big to keep on his property in his backyard. Gwendolyn’s favorite treats are pizza and chocolate chip cookies, but officials from FFW contend the alligator is not safely enclosed in Van Buren’s backyard.

In 1994, Gwendolyn gained notoriety when she was barely a 7 1/2-foot, 107-pound alligator. A Dade County judge decided in the male gator’s favor. Judge Loree Schwartz Feiler ruled the gator could stay with David, but only if adequate housing was provided. After an inspection, the judge allowed the gator to go home. The gator, purchased as a baby had been a pet. He sunbathes in his private pool surrounded by an eight-foot-high fence topped with barbed wire, “to keep human animals out,” David described after Gwendolyn came home. As to why a male gator has a girl’s name, for the first 20 years, his owners though he was a she!

Fish and wildlife officials have stated however that the man and his gator have been together for so long, the domestic home is actually what’s best for Gwendolyn. If the retired firefighter makes some needed changes to his property to accommodate Gwendolyn’s larger size, his beloved reptile can stay.
