6,000 volt cattle prod filmed used on greyhound racing dog in starting pen

A disturbing video of a New South Wales greyhound trainer, allegedly using a cattle prod on a dog, has been referred to authorities, reports AbcNewsAustralia. Greyhound hit with cattle probe

The egregious offense, filmed at Newcastle’s “The Gardens” track in 2012, shows a now identified trainer, using a 6,000 volt shock electric cattle prod (meant for cautious use only on adult cattle) on a dog as it waits in the starting box. The video just came to the attention of greyhound racing authorities in the past two months.

Greyhound racing has been banned in New South Wales beginning July 1, 2017, with Premier Mike Baird stating the “widespread and systemic mistreatment of animals” can not be tolerated. The ruling becomes the first state in Australia to ban greyhound racing, which followed after overwhelming evidence of animal cruelty, including the mass killing of dogs and live baiting. Most shocking were records showing between 48,000 – 68,000 dogs killed in the past 12 years in NSW because they were either not suitable for racing or too slow.

In the latest discovery, Greyhound Racing NSW’s interim chief executive officer Paul Newsom, said in a statement, the evidence and video were turned over to authorities for possible criminal charges for those involved in animal cruelty. Greyhound hit with cattle probe 2

Shatha Hamade, of Animals Australia stated the video provided further proof  the decision to stop racing was justified. “This is another sickening example of the kind of cruelty that trainers in this industry are prepared and willing to inflict, and all for the sake of winning a prize purse,”  Hamade stated. “The pain that the dog would be experiencing would be nothing short of torture.”

Industry proponents had recently launched an attempt to reverse the decision on next year’s ban. Read more about this terrible issue here.

Twisted gang of kids who tossed live puppies into fire arrested

In the Indian city of Hyderabad, a group of teenagers, some thought to be no more than 14-years-old, shared a horrifying three minute video from their cellphone to social media of them throwing terrified puppies into a lit fire and then using sticks to prevent the helpless little ones from escaping, reports Humane Society International India. Puppy trying to escape

On Tuesday, eight teenagers were arrested for burning three live puppies in the Musheerabad area. The accused were seen in a video they circulated on social media. They carried the three puppies, no more than two months old,  by their hind legs to a graveyard and burned them alive under a pile of dried branches, sticks and jute sacks. The puppies were seen struggling to escape while the culprits pushed them back and laughed as they held the screaming little ones down into the burning fire with poles.

The heart wrenching cries from the puppies lasted for several minutes; tragically showing how the defenseless  pups suffered before succumbing to the horrendous torture.

The arrest was made after Shreya Paropkari, cruelty response manager for HSI/India, and Vasanthi Vadi of People for Animals Hyderabad, met with the commissioner of Hyderabad police and presented the video. Managing director, Nuggehalli Jayasimha has called for “swift and stern action for this inexplicable violence against defenseless puppies.” The teens are expected to appear before a judicial magistrate before being sent to the Juvenile Justice Board, however “Rs 50” was the penalty for animal cruelty in the year 1960 when the law was enacted. Today, however, the value of Rs 50 is negligible. (,75cents U.S. currency)  The Government of India has not  changed the fine or punishment in the last 55 years.

A recent movement called #NoMore50 campaign focuses on revising the penalties for animal cruelty to amounts relevant to this day and age. “It is a tragedy for this country that animal cruelty is not taken as seriously as it should be,” stated Jayasimha, reported the Indian Express.

Humane Society International activist Navamita Mukherjee said she was “shocked,” adding: “It is an indicator of serious anti-social behaviour, including criminal offenses and violence towards women and children.”

A four-year-old German  shepherd who wins the hearts of everyone she meets has been transferred to the Palmdale Animal Care Center where it is hoped she will have a better opportunity to find her forever home. Siena the GS

On June 16, Siena arrived at the Downey Animal Care Center as a stray, and days later as her family never showed up to claim her, she was listed available for adoption.

Click here for Siena’s adoption listing. Siena (A4962242) “Siena is a smart girl who loves to play. She’s a working girl with a good amount of energy and ready to find a job that suits her talents. Siena may not have the greatest dog manners because she is a little pushy when meeting new dogs, so she would do best with someone who can give her some training and structure with proper dog introductions. She’s a total love bug too and would love to meet you at the new Palmdale shelter!” More information per Los Angeles Animal Care and Control is available here. Siena the GS 2

Siena’s short video can be viewed here.

As to how Siena has won over staff and volunteers alike at the shelters, Sal Valdepena shares his visit with this  sweet dog on Friday as Siena  whimpered when walked away to leave after their initial play period:

“She’s small in stature HUGE in heart. Her sweet personality is unmatched… Her majestic beauty is breathtaking. She is now located in the High desert and needs help. Although the new shelter is nice, I would love for her to be placed in rescue so the proper background checks can be done. shes to perfect to fail. Please share her with reputable rescues. Shes already left her mark with the new shelters staff; they also love her. Leaving her today made me so emotional. Walking away from her cries.” Siena the GS 3

And volunteer Desi Lara also described her interaction with Siena:

“One of my favorite words is Hot Diggity Dog!! To me it expresses such joy and happiness and excitement! This is how Siena makes me feel. Along with the word Fuzzy! Warm and fuzzy. She makes smiles come out of me. My heart starts bubbling.  She is so much love and joy and her TIME is running OUT!”

Dino

A nine-year-old German Shorthair pointer, who was found near death at a home in Maple Shade, New Jersey, last month, has passed away. The dog, dubbed “Dino,” was taken to the Marlton Animal Hospital on June 17 after an animal welfare check at his owner’s home revealed that he was in dire condition.

According to NJ 1015, Dino was in “critical” condition from the moment that he arrived to the veterinary hospital; Animal Lifeline, an area non-profit organization, stepped up to take on the emaciated dog’s veterinary expenses.

Despite extensive efforts by the veterinary staff, Dino’s condition did not improve. On Thursday, the Burlington County SPCA Humane Police updated Facebook followers who had been monitoring the sad situation.

On Monday, a Doctor at the hospital called the officer that filed charges against the owner and told him that he might want to come over to see Dino. When the officer arrived he found a very somber staff as the final medical tests had come back and there was nothing to do that would save him.

The Burlington County SPCA Humane Police noted that Dino’s original owner (who is not the individual facing animal cruelty charges) found out about the tragic situation via social media and she was able to see Dino before he died. The SPCA Humane Police wrote, “While visiting Dino, the officer was introduced to Dino’s original owner who found out about her dog’s condition on social media. She was devastated. Dino recognized her despite not seeing her for 5 years. He was able to muster enough strength to kiss her. She was the only person he kissed during his 4 week stay at the hospital.”

The Burlington County SPCA Humane Police stated:

We want to thank the Marlton Animal Hospital, Doctors and staff for their heroic efforts and the Animal Lifeline Rescue that funded the effort to save Dino after he was surrendered. Their assistance in the investigation was crucial to the case.
Dino still has a voice that will be heard one more time.

When humans turned a blind eye to suffering dogs, Texas rescue stepped up to help

As others turned a blind eye to the suffering of a mother dog and her young puppy in the Houston, Texas district of the Fifth Ward, volunteers and animal advocates from the Forgotten Dogs of the 5th Ward Project were out trying to find the strays that humans forgot. July and Jany Rae first spotted

On Wednesday, the photos of a mange covered SharPei and her defenseless puppy were sent to the rescue organization; the dogs had been scavenging for food around a local resident’s home. Volunteers immediately went over to help. On Thursday evening, the two dogs dubbed ‘July’ and her baby ‘Jany Rae’ were rescued. A Facebook post describes their compromised condition: July and Jany Rae

“So far what we know is that they have both types of mange, mama has bilateral entropion, both have every kind of worm they could, and most of all that they need lots and lots of love. They will recover with us and in two to three months you will see different dogs. Mama will probably have to have surgery on her eyes…”

Both dogs have been made comfortable and are now able to sleep peacefully; perhaps for the first time in a long while for July. Regular updates will be posted so Facebook followers and supporters can see the gradual metamorphosis from what they look like now to the beautiful dogs they will become with proper veterinary care, diet, exercise  and love. July and Jany Rae 3

For now July and Jany Rae are being cared for in a foster home, where they will rest, regain strength and gain weight- as they are very very skinny. Rescue photos below show the two have settled in quietly and are grateful for their safe new surroundings.

The toll of time is readily apparent on Katrina, a beautiful 14-year-old German shepherd, who was surrendered by her owner on July 20 to the Los Angeles County Animal Services facility in Baldwin Park, California. It is easy to see that Katrina was stunning in her younger days…her coat was once lush, her eyes bright, and her legs strong.

Today, Katrina’s spirit remains strong, even if her body is not. On Thursday, a woman who paid Katrina a visit wrote, “Her spirit is there, her determination. If only her back legs had that same strength. She got up and was happy to leave her kennel and venture outside with me, paying no attention to the barking dogs in the building she hobbled by.

Katrina’s body is tired – the last place that she should be is alone in a kennel run. Instead, she should be pampered and spoiled – she should be resting on a supportive bed and whispered sweet nothings from a compassionate friend. Please help Katrina find her way out of this animal control facility by taking a moment to share her adoption information.

Hundreds of animals discovered in deplorable conditions

Hundreds of animals, living in squalor, were discovered on sprawling property in Westport, Massachusetts, this week. According to Wednesday’s WISH TV News, the number of animals on the property located off Route 177, could number between 600 and 800.

The disturbing find has led to an animal cruelty investigation – and apparently it is not the first time that this same property has been found with animal cruelty related problems. According to South Coast Today, six years ago, a search warrant on the same property revealed sick and dead animals, along with illegal dumping and abandoned cars.

The current situation is even more dire – according to WPRI News, over five dozen animals, in pitiful condition, have already been put down since the investigation started on Tuesday. Many of the surviving animals have been taken to the Animal Rescue League of Boston for care.

The deplorable situation is located not far from a residential area – Westport Police Detective Jeff Majewski described the property as looking like a “Third World country.” He stated, “It sickens me that people from outside Westport bring in abused animals, burn their household trash and care not for the environment. This is an unmonitored business in the ‘game of animals.’ ”

The massive rescue effort has overwhelmed local resources. Read more about the prior situation found on this same property at this link to WISH TV.
