At the Weslaco Animal Services in Weslaco, Texas, owners abandoning their pets have become critical problems. On Saturday, the shelter reported a puppy had been abandoned at their outside kennels with no food or water.
On Monday, the news of more dogs having been abandoned in a small kennel a block away from the shelter, was shared on the Weslaco Animal Services Facebook page. Eight tiny puppies had been so tightly stuffed into a small kennel and abandoned. One puppy apparently suffocated and died.
In order to help the public, especially for families struggling with finances, the shelter does not charge anything to surrender pets. There is, however a policy they follow which is to fill out a simple work order. Animal Control officers will even come to someone’s home if the family surrenders their pet the same day.
The Weslaco Police Department is investigating the alleged abandonment of the puppies. Abandonment falls into the animal cruelty Class A Misdemeanor which carries fines up to $4,000 on one year in jail.
The shelter posted the following statements in response to the disturbing discovery:
To the person who thought it was ok to abandon a pup on Saturday at our outside kennels with no food or water, then abandoning 8 more dogs today in a small kennel a block away.
Just be aware we have upgraded our cameras and charges will be filled this is unacceptable. Please note we don’t charge or turn anybody away for owner surrenders …
