Heartbreaking: 14-year-old Lab at Baldwin Park shelter tenderly licks hands of visitors still showing his trust

Henry is a 14-year-old Labrador retriever that arrived at Baldwin Park Animal Care & Control on December 1, 2025. He was found as a stray.

This extremely friendly, old guy has carried with him many years of life, and today he trembles in the shelter; a scary place filled with noisy and clanking metal bowls, frightened dogs barking and strangers constantly walking by. Henry doesn’t cry nor does he whine. He just shakes.

His legs are stiff, and surely he must have arthritis, but when he senses a treat, he slowly walks up to the front of the kennel. His teeth are worn, his eyes are cloudy, his hearing might be muffled, and his lumps and lipomas are symbols of a long, hard life, but he still has that special sparkle; Henry just wants to be loved and safe.

Very few visitors stop to give him attention; most people walk past him, unaware of the fragile life still wanting to see tomorrow. When offered treats or when someone reaches a kind hand towards him, Henry struggles but gently meets an affectionate pat – still showing everyone that he trusts humans even though it seems as if he’s been disappointed over and over again for years.

A volunteer who met Henry couldn’t help but cry:

no dog should spend their life trembling on a cold floor, forgotten and overlooked. henry deserves relief from pain, gentle hands and love in the years he has left. He deserves to leave through the front door – not the back…

Notes on Henry’s medical evaluation:

Fibrotic pinna, worn dentition, heavy dental tartar

Cataracts and possible prior ear infections

Multiple subcutaneous masses, lipomas and skin tags

Stiff gait in all four legs, arthritis, spondylosis
