Just one week ago, an abandoned German shepherd was found lying next to a Benton dumpster in Mississippi; he had been starving, trembling and searching for shelter inside an old abandoned house.
He was named Chief, and he’s one of the lucky ones. Not a day goes by that thousands of animals are abandoned, and each and every story is truly heartbreaking. It had been NYC Second Chance Rescue who stepped forward to help him.
Most are brought to rural shelters that are underequipped, overcrowded and have few reserves to help those pets, just like Chief, needing lifesaving treatments.
Left on roadsides when they no longer fit into someone’s life.
Left to fend for themselves in a world far too big, too dangerous, and too cold for a soul with no help and no voice.
Most won’t be found. Most won’t be saved.
Chief was rushed to an emergency veterinarian hospital where he began receiving the care he urgently needed. He was so depleted; even eating was a struggle.
And on Sunday, Chief was released from the hospital and is now resting and recuperating at a loving foster home.

For the first time in a very long time, he is sleeping on a soft bed instead of the cold ground. He is eating, resting, and slowly learning that the world can be kind. His foster family says he is gentle, grateful, and soaking up every bit of comfort he’s offered.

German Shepherd Dog Mixed Breed
“Chief’s story is one of quiet strength and second chances. He was found in an abandoned house near a Mississippi dump site — severely emaciated, weak, and all alone. Just skin and bones, Chief had been fighting to survive with no one to care for him.
But those days are behind him now. Chief is safe, healing, and finally learning what love feels like. Beneath his rough past is a gentle soul who just wants to belong. He’s the kind of dog who will look at you with gratitude in his eyes and love you with his whole heart.
Chief deserves the soft bed, the full belly, and the family he never had. Could you be the one to show him what forever feels like?“
