No one wants Basil so let’s try one more time before he is put to sleep by NYC shelter

Hope for a sweet dog scheduled to be euthanized today whispers and gently urges us to try one more time to find a home for Basil. He’s a middle-aged dog, a bit on the portly size, but he always makes the best of his situation. He arrived at the New York City Animal Care Centers in Manhattan on Christmas Eve after having been darted by police in the chest. He scanned positive for a microchip, but his owner never came for him.

It’s not like Basil to have pouted in his kennel cage however. He quickly adjusted and became on of the shelter’s favorite dogs, He lived in the office for awhile, but the “Houdini” in him, once too often didn’t earn him any extra privileges so back he went to his kennel enclosure.

Volunteers and shelter staff give him as much attention as time and space allows, and no doubt Basil appreciates each and every scratch behind the ears and kiss on top of his sweet head:

He does love them, and smiles and cuddles up with everyone when he is in the play yard. If they visit his kennel, he smiles and wags some more. But deep down, he wants on thing and one thing only – it’s his big dream – a family of his own where he will be the only dog.

Basil has lived in two different foster homes. He is reported to be house-trained, loves to play with toys and enjoys taking naps with his belly up. Some situations, however make Basil very uncomfortable, and he would do best with a patient person away from the noise and confusion of the city.

This poor pup has been listed five times, and no one has ever shown him any interest. And today, we are hoping to find someone to help dear Basil before he is euthanized this afternoon.

According to the shelter, a donation and stipend of $750 has been offered to help for additional training

 It’s hard to be older and portly in a shelter full of younger and more boisterous pups. Basil has only his dignity, his hope, and his heart that he is willing to give to a deserving family. AT RISK NOTE:
Basil is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. He has displayed high levels of dog reactivity displaying the potential to redirect frustration (having bitten in this context in the previous foster home). Though initially fearful in new environments, Basil has warmed up significantly to many humans. Medically, he has a mass on his leg.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:

3/5/23: Basil comes to the front of the kennel with a neutral body when approached. He is easily leashed and taken out for a walk on the street. He pulls hard at times but no reactivity is seen. He is aloof with the handler, not coming over when spoken to. Basil walked around the block and then brought back in and returned to the kennel without issue.

3/2/23: Basil is laying in the kennel but stands at the front and is easily leashed and removed from the kennel. Once outside, he remains in one spot. The handler pets him briefly along his torso. Basil then approaches the handler with a soft wagging body. He takes treats gently and will sit for treats. He is easily returned to his kennel.
