On Saturday evening in Chaffee County, a man relaxing in a hot tub was attacked by a mountain lion. According to the press release from the Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW), the victim suffered four scratches “on top of his head and near his right eye.”

Four wildlife officers responded to the call which occurred at a rental home. The victim and his wife had been sitting in the hot tub when the man “felt something grab his head.”

He and his wife began screaming and splashing water at the animal. The victim’s wife grabbed a flashlight and shined it on the animal, which they then identified as a mountain lion.

After the mountain lion retreated, the couple ran back to the safety of the house which was located a short distance away from the hot tub. The owner of the property, a CPW employee notified officers.

Officers are searching the area of the lion, but because of the freezing temperatures, no footprints in the snow could be followed. A trap has been set up for the lion hoping that he will be captured.

We think it’s likely the mountain lion saw the man’s head move in the darkness at ground level but didn’t recognize the people in the hot tub.

Signs have since been posted in the area warning people about the incident. Fortunately, the man only suffered minor injuries.
