In Morristown, Tennessee, an animal cruelty case involving a tiny Chihuahua, so disturbing and heartless, led to the arrest of the dog’s owners on Friday. The couple is accused of having tortured the Chihuahua – breaking bones and burning it in addition to failing to provide her with food, water, shelter or care.
On June 7, police were summoned to the home of Joshua Coffey, 35 and his wife Melissa Coffey, 26. Joshua had called authorities to report his wife had killed the family dog. When police arrived they found the dog in a black trash bag still alive. During the investigation, officers discovered the dog had suffered broken bones and had burn marks on her face.
The dog is now under the care of Morristown-Hamblen Humane Society where she is being treated at the Southern Care Veterinary Hospital. On their Facebook page, the Morristown-Hamblen Humane Society posted the following encouraging update on the dog’s condition:
“We appreciate all the calls on the Chihuahua’s welfare from the cruelty case. However, this is an ongoing criminal case and we cannot discuss it. But we can tell you she is safe and under veterinary care and will continue to receive the treatment necessary to improve her health. Any donations would be appreciated for her ongoing medical care that will be expensive. We will update as we can and any questions or concerns please contact the shelter and not the vet.”
