When Stephanie, a shelter volunteer, arrived to meet Statler, on Monday at the Fulton County Animal Services in Atlanta, Georgia, all she had been given was the dog’s name. Sadly, her stomach dropped as she peeked into the kennel and met the 10-year-old senior.
The look in his eyes appeared to signal how he was “just short of giving up.” Surrounded by the loud noises of the shelter, and lying in his kennel in such poor condition, Statler could be older than 10 or maybe it was a reflection on a past hard life.
As Stephanie opened Statler’s kennel, he slowly rose to his feet, and together they walked outside. He did his bathroom necessities quickly; perhaps he is housetrained? In the yard he stayed close, but not enough to want to be petted, but near enough to feel the closeness of a kind human.
I truly believe he wants to trust, but I don’t think humans have been kind to him. He loved treats, a good sign that he’s still eating even with being so sick. He has a chance, there’s still some fight left in him but I can tell it’s fading….
Statler arrived at the shelter with another dog early in May 2026, and for a time they found comfort with each other. Eventually that closeness became too much for Statler.
Please come meet this sweet senior named Statler at Fulton County Animal Services. He can be fostered or adopted, and he desperately needs out before he gives up.
