One-pound puppy abandoned in bucket at shelter door gets second chance

Spread the love

Over the weekend, what could only be described as truly heartbreaking, someone abandoned a one-pound puppy in a bucket at the door of a Dallas shelter hours before it opened.

Estimated to be no more than a few weeks of age, the puppy now named Checkers had been covered in wounds, dehydrated, infected with fleas and suffering from maggots in his wounds and his nose. He also tested positive for hookworms, leaving his tiny body fighting to survive.

Dallas Dog -Rescue.Rehab.Reform stepped in immediately offering to help Checkers. Since arriving at the emergency veterinarian hospital, Checkers has been receiving antibiotics, deworming treatment, fluids, wound care and supportive medical treatment. Despite everything he has endured, this little guy continues to fight.

He has been responding to treatment, and he is being prepared to begin the next phase of his recovery in a foster home rather than a hospital kennel.

We’re hopeful that Checkers may be able to leave the hospital and head to a foster home today.

Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared, and supported Checkers. Because of you, a puppy who was abandoned in a bucket is getting a chance to heal, grow, and know what love feels like.
