At NYC Second Chance Rescue, a 10-year-old terrier arrived in devastating condition just two days ago. His body had been worn down from years without care. He struggled just to breathe and to survive. Today, for the first time, rescuers are seeing a small but meaningful shift in his fight to live.

On Monday, April 27, the non profit animal welfare organization had been asked to help a small dog found collapsed on the side of a road in Georgia. The dog, dubbed Hendrix, had been struck by a car and left to languish alone in excruciating pain. When he arrived at the veterinarian emergency hospital, he was barely responsive and clinging to life.
He was immediately triaged where it was found his body told a story of lifelong abuse and neglect. He was covered in old chemical burns, his skin was painful and inflamed, and radiographs confirmed he had a fractured tibia/fibula and a dislocated hip. To make things even worse, he was both emaciated and anemic.
The good news is he has been responsive to deep pain sensation which gives rescuers hope, that along with surgery, he will be able to walk again. Of high importance however, is the concern for lung contusions or the possibility of pneumonia.
With supportive care, Hendrix’ lungs have shown a marked improvement, although he is still in critical condition.
Sadly, it does not appear this dog has ever known a single good day.
His lungs are improving, and even though he is still described to be in critical condition, Hendrix is scheduled for surgery to repair the damage his body has had to endure for a long period of time.

The plan is extensive. He will undergo an FHO (femoral head ostectomy) to address his dislocated hip, along with surgical repair of his fractured tibia. During the procedure, he will also be neutered, and any abnormalities like the previously noted enlarged and underdeveloped testicle, will be sent out for biopsy. In addition, cultures and biopsies will be taken from his open wounds to ensure he is receiving the most appropriate antibiotic treatment moving forward.
Because Hendrix is a senior, his recovery will take months. Today, many people are fighting to help Hendrix. He is being closely monitored and given a chance at the loving life which he has undoubtedly been denied.

Please keep him in your thoughts as he heads into surgery.
