NYC Second Chance Rescue received an emergency plea from their shelter partner in Georgia on Monday. A puppy had just been discovered inside of a children’s playground tunnel gasping for air.
The puppy was unable to walk, stand or even move. Clearly some heartless individual had brought him there and left him to die.

Animal control officers arrived and rushed him to the local shelter where radiographs revealed he had a collapsed lung. It is believed to have been caused by significant blunt force trauma. Veterinarians do not believe his injuries had been caused by an accident nor had he been struck by a vehicle nor was he attacked by another dog.
The local shelter veterinarian had done everything possible for the puppy. His oxygen level at the time was only at 74%. He has been named Andy, and everything possible to relieve the pressure around his lungs until he can receive specialty hospital intervention has been done.
The nearest emergency hospital is over 40 minutes away. When he arrived, veterinarians immediately began emergency life saving treatment. Andy remains in critical condition and is now dependent on 40% oxygen to breathe.

Doctors have now confirmed that Andy suffered a traumatic brain injury. His care team onboarded the medication, Mannitol, in an attempt to help reduce dangerous cranial pressure and swelling surrounding his brain.
One of Andy’s eyes may be permanently destroyed from the impact. It is not known if his eye can be saved.
He also has significant lung contusions, making every breath a struggle. It is not known when or if he will come off oxygen, nor is it known if Andy will even survive, but not one rescuer nor one veterinarian or staff member will give up.
On his most recent update, Andy lifted his head. That may seem small to the world, but for a puppy in this condition, it means everything.
Animal Control and law enforcement have been notified and are actively investigating. Information has been provided with the location where Andy was found and investigators are working to locate any possible surveillance footage.
Andy is fighting incredibly hard to stay here.
And as devastating as this is, everyone remains thankful he is no longer suffering alone in that tunnel.
NYCSCR desperately needs the support of the community right now. Oxygen support, ICU hospitalization, neurological care, and around-the-clock monitoring are extraordinarily costly, and Andy’s medical expenses will climb into the thousands as we continue fighting to save his life.
