In Chico, California, a man accused of injuring a puppy appeared at the Butte County Superior Court on Friday, April 10, according to Mike Ramsey of the Butte County District Attorney’s Office.
Sean Leonard Henneberry, 40 faces felony animal abuse charges, and if found guilty could spend up to three years in the county jail.
On April 7, officers from the Chico Police Department responded to a report referencing a homeless man beating a puppy on East Third Avenue.
When officers arrived, witnesses stated they had seen Henneberry repeatedly hitting a husky puppy with a furniture leg and then drag the puppy across the street. It was at that time one of the witnesses intervened and Henneberry left the scene, abandoning the puppy. Witnesses retrieved the pup and wrapped it in a blanket until officers arrived. The puppy was scratched and bleeding with a possible broken paw or leg.
The puppy was rushed to the Valley Oak Veterinary Center where veterinarians confirmed the puppy suffered a fractured paw. He remains in the care of the veterinary hospital.
Officers later located Henneberry nearby and arrested him.
On Friday, Henneberry was appointed a public defended and remains in jail. He is scheduled to return to court on April 15.
