Upstate New York woman charged after starving helpless dog discovered just ‘days from death’

An upstate New York woman faces felony animal cruelty charges after she allegedly abandoned a dog in an apartment, leaving him so emaciated, officials said the sweet dog had just been “days from death.”

The dog, named Rhett, was found in a Kirkland apartment near Utica on May 16. His heartbreaking photos showed he was too weak to even stand, and his ribs and spine showed through the thin skin barely covered with fur and infested with fleas.

Kirkland Spirits Greyhound Adoption has stepped up to help. No one knows how long the dog had been left alone in the apartment with no food or water.

When Rhett first arrived: (Viewers must have a Facebook page to view Facebook Watch videos. We apologize for any inconvenience and have added extra photos)

He had received blood transfusions as well as placed on a special diet so as not to stress his starved body and anemic conditions. After a week of intensive treatments, Rhett has been able to stand and take a few steps.

On Wednesday, Lindsay Meelan, 36, was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty – a felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Just this week, the rescue organization posted a brief video clip of Rhett standing up and enjoying his dinner. How sweet!

Kindred Spirits Greyhound Adoption, Inc. has set up a GoFundMe page to help with the expensive care needed to nurse Rhett back to health.

We are a small foster based rescue and the $6000 it cost to save him has depleted our funds. He is by no means totally out of the woods yet but has been moved to a foster home where he is receiving much love and great care and continues to slowly improve.
