Not only was a sweet five-year-old, nursing mother dog found abandoned and tethered to a chain link fence in Phoenix, Arizona, the temperature outdoors in the scorching heat registered at 99 degrees.
According to the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) a call had been received from a concerned neighbor on May 30, about a dog leashed outdoors in the heat. When rescuers arrived, the concrete sidewalk clocked in at 133 degrees where the mother dog waited for help. A blanket was put down to cool and protect her overheated and sore paw pads; she was given water to relieve her thirst.
It had been the shelter’s Emergency Animal Medical Technicians and the Phoenix Police Department who were surprised to find the mother dog painted with multi colored spots to make her look like a leopard. Cool towels were used to bring her temperature down from 105.7 to 102.5.

Authorities were able to find the owner of the dogs who surrendered the American pit bull terrier, named Rainbow Brite because they were not able to care for the dogs. The family claimed they had found the dog as a stray about a month earlier. Inside of the home, rescuers found her nine puppies, no more than three weeks of age. They surrendered the puppies to the shelter.

Five year-old Rainbow Brite was underweight when she arrived, and the family was moved to the Muttemity Suites at the shelter where it’s quiet and dedicated to pregnant and nursing mother dogs. The puppies are being called Sprites.

The puppies will remain in the shelter and with their mother until they are eight-weeks-old.

There hasn’t been any explanation why the dog was painted to look like a leopard. Rainbow Brite isn’t suffering from any adverse reactions to the paint used, but the spots will eventually disappear and her fur will grow out.
Rainbow Brite and her puppies have now found a foster home.
