A team of local rescuers from NYC Second Chance Rescue Dogs had received a desperate plea to help a dog in Mississippi who had been abandoned at one of the infamous dumpster sites in the area. When the volunteers arrived, they spotted a shivering dog curled up in a ball on a filthy couch, trying to stay warm.

Of course, the innocent dog had no idea who the people standing so close to her were, and the dog shook even more; who were they and were they going to be cruel to her like so many others had been, and would they let her down again as so many humans had already done? After all, there she was trying her best to stay warm in the subfreezing temperatures and having to scavenge for bits of food just to survive.

This time however her rescue warriors were different. Their voices were gentle and welcoming. She anxiously wagged her tail, and for the first time, in a long time, a gentle hand reached out to comfort her. Finally, someone cared.

Watching her curled up on an old tossed away couch in an area with overflowing dumpsters and trying desperately to escape the cold underneath a patched blanket, broke everyone’s heart and brought rescuers to tears.

This is the sad reality of what is happening to dogs nationwide. They are being dumped, whether that be at a shelter or on the streets. The world is a cruel place, especially for the voiceless.

Cammi, as this sweet girl is now called, is in the care of NYC Second Chance Rescue. There was no way these rescuers were going to leave her behind, and even though rescues are full and bursting at the seams, local volunteers and foster parents truly are making the difference.

Check out her video. There she was found, just trying to stay warm and survive.

Cammi is now with the organization’s rescue partners in Mississippi. Lisa Reams, a rescuer in Mississippi who has been saving countless dogs just like Cammi, is currently caring for this lovely, docile pup. Cammi has already met a new doggy friend and is already playing. Dogs are just so forgiving.

This weekend Cammi will be vetted and spayed before heading to her foster home to rest and recuperate

In the meantime, the goal is to find Cammi a forever home. Cammi is quite young, and estimated to be about a year and a half old; and adoption applications can be found on our website, nycscr.org/adopt
