It had been early Monday morning when Janine Guido, president and founder of Speranza Animal Rescue in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania was called by her mother because she found a “dead” dog on her porch in an Amazon box.
Fortunately, it turned out the puppy was not dead; the 11-month-old Border collie mix was unconscious and barely breathing. A note had been taped on the box indicating the person who abandoned him had only had the puppy for a month when he became very sick.
According to the note taped to the box, the puppy was deaf and had only been owned by the person for a month before he became very ill. He was badly matted and covered in feces and urine. Janine renamed him G.I. Joe and set out on the immediate journey to help.
With no time to spare, Janine rushed him to her veterinarian, who helped stabilize the puppy’s condition until the next morning, when he was rushed to a specialty emergency veterinarian hospital where IV transfusions were provided to make him more comfortable and to begin to assess his health since he had been having seizures.
WITHOUT KNOWING HIS HISTORY WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT HOW LONG THESE SEIZURES HAVE BEEN HAPPENING. THE ONLY THING GIVING US HOPE RIGHT NOW IS HE’S FIGHTING. HE’S TRYING TO STAND ( NEEDS ASSISTANCE BUT HE’S DOING IT! ).

After an MRI and a spinal tap, nothing unusual was seen, and GI Joe seems to be making a miraculous recovery. He has been up and eating on his own; quite the difference from yesterday when he had been unresponsive and having violent seizures.
And the diagnosis? GI Joe was born deaf and blind. He is thought to be epileptic and is receiving medication for seizures.
And this morning, the most amazing news and update came from his veterinarians.
He’s doing well! He’s able to walk ON HIS OWN. He’s still wobbly but he’s walking!!

Janine was later told GI Joe could be released from the hospital, and an application to foster the puppy is currently being reviewed. We are thrilled for this puppy, and we are grateful for the devotion and the huge compassion Janine, generous donors, supporters and Speranza Rescue maintain for those in need.
At this time, GI Joe is quite frightened and his behavior reflects his anxiety, but the veterinarian staff and volunteers think some time; and healing both emotionally and physically, will make a huge difference.

Glad this precious treasure is getting the help he needs.
Blind and deaf dogs are the same as dogs without disabilities. They will always beg for treats and affection. They love Grammy and Grampy and HATE the vet!!! Don’t rearrange the furniture too often and all will be fine if you help him or her sniff around the rooms. We have had disabled cats and dogs and they do just fine with our family.
