A lucky turn of events led to the rescue of a three-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux cross named Roxy in Boxted, Essex. On April 21st, a resident, Emma Fowler, discovered Roxy huddled and frightened behind a bush on her driveway.

The Good Samaritan had been shocked to find the dog curled up in a sunny spot on the driveway, and when she approached the dog, once Roxy realized Emma was there to help her, seemed genuinely relieved. Concerned for her health, Emma took the dog to an emergency veterinarian who then contacted the RSPCA.

She was wary at first, but as soon as she realized we were there to help, she warmed right up.

According to RSPCA Inspector Nicky Thorne, Roxy was “painfully thin.” It was apparent the dog had been neglected for a long period of time; Roxy only weighed 64 pounds, and a dog of her breed should weigh between 99 to 120 pounds.

The RSPCA is now caring for Roxy and is conducting an investigation to find her previous owners. Roxy is microchipped, but leads so far have gone cold. “We’d love to hear from anyone who recognizes Roxy or who may know something about her recent past,” said Inspector Thorne. Her latest record indicated she had been rehomed in September 2023.

Roxy’s story is a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership. The RSPCA urges anyone considering getting a pet to carefully research the needs of the breed and ensure they can commit to providing a lifetime of love and care.

Happy Ending Wanted

Roxy is receiving the medical attention and TLC she desperately needs at the RSPCA. While the investigation continues, RSPCA staff are hopeful that Roxy will find a loving forever home where she can thrive.
