It’s a scary time in Cohasset, Massachusetts for dogs and all pets who enjoy some time in the backyard. All pet owners are being warned not to leave their canine pals outdoors for any length of time because coyote sightings have become more prevalent and pose a major safety hazard in recent months.

According to Live95.9News, it had been Saturday night when the family dog had been outside and fending off three coyotes. The dog was able to scare the coyotes away, and this family and dog were lucky. What about smaller dogs or someone’s cat outdoors for some fresh air as Spring weather approaches? Not many domestic pets could fend off a pack of coyotes.

There have been a number of complaints in the area about coyote attacks. Wildlife officials have explained that coyotes do not know the difference between a medium sized domestic dog and another coyote, and that makes the coyotes even more aggressive.

Coyotes roam all over the state, and it can’t be emphasized enough to follow these suggestions:

  1. Make sure your dogs are leashed and supervised at all times
  2. Do not leave any food sources around. Keep grills clean, store garbage cans in the garage.
  3. If you see a coyote near you, make loud noises, throw small objects at them and make yourself appear larger.
  4. Always keep yourself between the coyote and small children.
