This gorgeous Husky named “Winter” is described as a friendly, outgoing and tolerant pup with children and strangers alike. When she is around dogs she knows, she enjoys playing, running and good natured interaction. All she wants is attention. So why is she on the dreaded list to be euthanized today at the Brooklyn New York City Animal Care Centers?
Unfortunately, Winter’s former owners were inexperienced and never provided their dog with basic training. She never learned how to greet someone gracefully, she had no leash manners and was never taught how to share. What a shame, since Winter loves to please; it’s only that she just didn’t know.
Winter needs to learn the command “drop it/leave it” in order for her to understand that sharing is part of having good canine manners. She pulls hard when leashed and when she meets someone new, doesn’t understand that it is unacceptable to jump up to give someone love and doggy hugs. So now she is on the short list because she just didn’t know.

And this is what happens when a dog is not taught her basic manners. How, when Winter was never trained to behave properly, can she be blamed for her owners’ ignorance? And now Winter is slated to die today.
Winter has a history of resource guarding food. The client states that winter behavior issues happen when people go near her when she has food near her. the client states that 1 yr ago her son attempted to take food out of her kennel while she was inside because she had taken it out of the garbage. Winter snapped at his hand leaving a few scrapes on his hand. The next incident happened on 11/19/2023 . The clients neighbors 9 yr old child went to get food from off the counter. Winter also went to get the food off the counter. The child then pushed the dog down off the counter and the dog bit her in the hand leaving 2 punctures and scrapes. The child was taken to the hospital 2xs for her injuries for possible infection. Winter is partially housetrained. Her energy level is very high.

“Winter is in need of emergency placement due to behavior concerns. According to Winter’s owner, Winter has developed a tendency to guard her food and, unfortunately, this behavior has escalated to the point of snapping and biting a family member. Despite these recent challenges, her owner describes Winter as a generally social, affectionate, active, and playful companion. In the care centers, Winter consistently displays tension and discomfort when touched, although she does accept treats from staff. Medically, Winter has canine infectious respiratory disease complex.”
The following was Winter’s last evaluation when taken out of her kennel for a walk:
“12/11/2023: When the Handler approaches, Winter is standing in front of the kennel door. The handler tosses treats to distract her. Winter ignores them. The handler leashes her and escorts her outside. Winter starts out with a slightly tucked tail but over time her tail comes out and her body language becomes loose. When on walks Winter slightly pulls ahead of the handler, taking in the surroundings. Winter will put her front paws on the handler as a means to demand attention. Winter is escorted back to the building, kenneled and unleashed with no issues.”
