In Syracuse, New York, an abandoned senior dog named Max was discovered tied to a picnic table on Thursday at Schiller Park. A note attached to a pole nearby said “he was a good boy.”

It had been a very hot day, and whoever abandoned him, left Max with little shelter under a gazebo. He was emaciated and dehydrated. The Good Samaritans who found him gave him water which he eagerly lapped up. Cuse Pit Crew arrived to help after having received a call from Syracuse Animal Control.

“Max is not the first, nor will he be the last dog abandoned in a park. We believe this could’ve been avoided if more people are aware of our services. We are not a rescue, BUT we will help problem solve with you to the best of our ability. We’ll do it without judgement because we want pet owners to feel safe coming to us for help. The last thing we want is to see another Max left in a park to fend for himself. Please email us at [email protected] for questions on ways we can help,” the non-profit posted on social media, hoping to bring more awareness and help to the community.
The attached note had the dog’s name, his age and that he needed help:
i am a good boy. i’m about 17 years old. my name is max. my owners can’t take care of me no more. please help me.
Syracuse Police arrived and brought Max to an emergency veterinarian at Beaver Lake Animal Hospital. He has since been released into the custody of the Humane CNY where he is currently being treated for infections to his eyes and ears. He is also arthritic.

Max has been enjoying his rest at the shelter. He is on a strict re-feeding schedule but that doesn’t seem to bother him much! He was able to get some much needed pain meds and antibiotics for his eyes and ears.

His bloodwork looks pretty decent for an older guy in his condition, aside from being anemic and dehydrated. He has arthritis and vision issues. Max has suffered from chronic ear infections for so long that his ears are permanently damaged. Despite all this, we’re learning that he is a lively and curious boy, and he’s liked all the humans he’s met so far.
We are actively working on placing him in a foster home. Again Max and his soulful lil eyes say THANK YOU for your support.
The police made quick work of identifying a suspect who has since been arrested on one count of abandonment and one count of cruelty. Subsequently he has been surrendered which leaves us with the honor of getting Max feeling the best that he can.
