A puppy named Chowder is learning to navigate through life with just three legs after suffering a catastrophic injury that required amputation. According to the Arizona Humane Society, the golden retriever mix pup, named Chowder, had a badly fractured hind leg and their trauma veterinarians determined that amputation was the best option.

As reported by AZ Family, Chowder’s former owner, 28-year-old Sean Ray, hurt the three-month-old puppy because he was “upset” that Chowder had an accident in the house. The incident resulted in Ray facing a felony charge of animal abuse.

Things are looking up for the abused pup. According to the Arizona Humane Society, he is ready for a new home! On Monday, the animal welfare agency said:

Chowder is available for adoption at AHS’ PetSmart Scottsdale location! Schedule your adoption appointment at azhumane.org/adopt.

The shelter provided information about the proper way to address animal cruelty situations, writing:

With April being National Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, AHS wants to remind people who see suspected abuse to report it by calling their local police department or AHS’ Field Dispatch Team at 602.997.7585 Ext. 2073. Callers can remain anonymous. We also encourage people to never take matters into their own hands and always alert the authorities.
