‘Sleepy’ a friendly senior left at the shelter at 15-years-old

“Sleepy” was left at the shelter at 15-years-old. Staff members and volunteers at the Carson Shelter in California describe the senior as a friendly guy. Sadly, he may have been neglected at his former home and the tips of his ears are raw and sore, he has alopecia, callouses and some of his teeth are missing and worn.

Sleepy has done very well during his assessment. Waiting at the front of his kennel when the volunteer arrived, Sleepy had a closed mouth, soft eyes, a relaxed body, neutral ears and a gentle wag.

“He sniffed the runner’s leash when presented to him, continuing to wait at the front patiently. Once the runner opened the gate to leash him, Sleepy backed away. He became slightly avoidant, but ultimately allowed himself to be removed with ease. He was then led to the yard.

Sleepy was enthusiastic about his adventure, that’s for sure.

“Sleepy pulled moderately due to his excitement, bypassing all the barking dogs on the way. He was led into the catch pen upon arrival where was was collared with ease. Sleepy had a loose posture as he approached the fence where the other dogs stood.

And then it was time to join the other dogs for a bit of play.

“He displayed no concerning behaviors and was let into the yard once the handlers were ready. Sleepy re-approached the other dogs upon entering, exchanging greetings appropriately. He had a closed mouth, soft eyes, a relaxed body, neutral ears, and a loose wag as he continued to interact. Sleepy eventually walked away to explore t he yard, but at time to interact with nearby dogs. Over time, Sleepy showed less interest in the dogs and kept to himself as he wandered the yard.

Sleepy is available to be adopted, and is tolerant of other dogs although the best fit would be with middle school aged children and calm family dogs.
