A rare white giraffe has been fitted with a tracking device for its protection in southeast Kenya after its family was killed by poachers. The giraffe has a rare genetic condition known as leucism which is responsible for the partial loss of pigmentation in its skin.
According to the Northern Rangelands Trust, the giraffe lives in the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy, and the tracking device was successfully placed on one of its horns on Tuesday.

The world’s only known white giraffe has been fitted with a GPS tracking device at Ishaqbini-Hirola Community Conservancy with support from Northern Rangelands Trust| Save Giraffes Now and Savannah Tracking Ltd upon request by the Conservancy board to the Kenya Wildlife Service.
The GPS unit will give hourly updates of his location enabling rangers to monitor his movements on a daily basis and in doing so keep this unique animal safer from poachers.”
The white male giraffe had been one of three giraffes; a white female and her calf were killed by poachers in March 2020. Another white giraffe was spotted in 2015 in Tanzania. The unusual and beautiful animals made worldwide news.
There are 68,000 giraffes in the word and the species is classified as vulnerable. Why anyone would want to shoot and kill a giraffe for a “hunting adventure” is indeed tragic.
