Harley was abandoned at a high-kill rural shelter in Texas on Thursday where dogs with medical problems are the first to be euthanized. Just two-years-old, the tiny terrier was paralyzed; he dragged his hind quarters and had no control over his bladder, yet when volunteers met him, the pup was so happy and content, he didn’t allow his disability to interfere in his pure zest for life.harley the paralyzed 4

His advocate at the shelter took him home after he arrived, because she knew if she left him over night, she would never see him again… And then Rescue Dogs Rock NYC was contacted, and co-founder Stacey Silverstein coordinated rescue efforts to transfer Harley to South Texas Veterinarian Specialists:

“X-rays have been taken and they show no broken bones. The next step is an expensive MRI to determine whether Harley‘s spine is fractured,” posted Stacey on Friday, and then further testing was ordered.Harley the paralyzed2

It was not known if the injury was recent or if it had been an older injury. On Friday afternoon the diagnosis came in.

“Harley just had an MRI which revealed 2 bulging discs on each side of his spine. The only hope Harley has to ever walk again is to have surgery right this very moment to repair the discs. Since his injury occurred more than 24 hours ago, his chances are 50/50 that the surgery will help , but we must try,” Stacey updated the organization’s Facebook page. “Harley deserves every chance at walking again and we hope you agree. The estimate is attached, and the surgery will be between $3500 and $5000.”

And the decision was made to do all that could be done for the paralyzed dog, and just an hour later, surgery was performed. It was the dog’s only chance to regain feeling in his legs and be able to walk again. Harley will remain at the veterinarian hospital for a few days; it will be a wait and see if he gets movement in his hind quarters. No matter what the outcome, Rescue Dogs Rock NYC will make sure Harley lives the best life possible.
