Chato is a ten-year-old male German shepherd who was painfully surrendered to the Carson Animal Care Center on Monday. In a heartbreaking separation, Chato’s owner cried as he left his best friend behind. The two had met ten years prior when the dog was sick in the shelter and lost an eye. Their love was undeniable, but life stepped in, and this time it wasn’t kind. The man had been evicted from his home and will be living in his car. Trying to do what is best for his dog and knowing life in a car for a dog is not a viable alternative, Chato has become an unintentional victim.

Click here for Chato’s Pet Harbor listing. “My name is Chato and I am described as a neutered male, black and tan German Shepherd Dog mix. The shelter thinks I am about 10 years old. I have been at the shelter since Mar 13, 2017.” For more information about this animal, call Los Angeles County Animal Control – Carson at (310) 523-9566. Ask for information about animal ID number A3724798. A Facebook page for this dog can be followed here.

  1. OMG I’m so sorry for both Chato and his owner. Hoping the owner changes his mind and wants him back. Living in a car shouldn’t stop you from keeping your beloved companion. I’m sure in the eyes of Chato he would much rather live in the car and not in a shelter with strangers.

    • I agree. The dog would be happy with his person no matter what the living situation. His life is in danger at the shelter. I hope the public comes to his and his person’s rescue asap. We’ve seen it happen before. Good luck to them.

      • The majority of these comments are stating the same facts, this man and his companion need Help! Yet no one has offered any…I’m starting a go fund me account first this man, I hope you’ll all reach out and help them.

      • Linda I will. Let us know when you have set one up. I set up a gofundme for Animals in Need to help with rescue groups and shelters. I’m so disappointed. I got one $20 donation.

      • Actually from what I have read on some Facebook posts, it sound’s like his Wife kicked him and the dog out of the house. Don’t know what their problem was, It could only be speculation on my part why he must live in his car.

      • If so if I were that husband I would have told the wife to back her bags if it meant saving my dog from having to go to a shelter.

  2. It would make no difference to me! If I’m living in my car so is my baby! I could not give up my soul! To me my pets are my soul! I could no more live without one than I could without the other! At least with me they are loved taken care of fed and we have each other!

  3. I feel for his owner BUT does he know that Carson is also a high kill shelter? Chato is better off in a car with the human that he loves than dead.

  4. Will someone help me set up a go fund me site for this man and his companion to help them stay together please! The gentleman is heartbroken over being forced to leave his family member behind. He’s trying to do right for his dog. If everyone would donate a few dollars we could find them a place where they could be together and his dog would be safe, until a permanent home could be located. Please!!! They need our help right now!!!

    • I agree. They need help. Perhaps someone living there could set up a fund? Please help them. Please don’t blame this guy. He’s doing what he thinks best for his beloved dog. Put yourself in his shoes please. A little compassion and financial help would go a long way in helping them both!!

  5. I hope some one steps up and helps this man and his dog this is so sad prayers to them both I be crying to I cry just hearing such a thing God bless and keep you both safe and pray you get him back

  6. Chato deserves to be w/his owner no matter what the situation. He is obviously loved and the owner’s situation should be in the news where some kind person can help both be reunited. Chato needs to be with the man who loves him, not in some shelter where he is just another number. PLEASE HELP CHATO AND HIS OWNER.
