Yorkie thrown down metal slide of trash chute discovered in D.C. apartment complex

At Miri’s Haven Senior Dog Rescue, located in Rockville, Maryland, we meet a tiny survivor named Apple. Her story is heartbreaking, but because of kind-hearted volunteers and rescuers, her future looks bright.

The pint-sized Yorkie had been thrown down a metal chute leading to the darkness of the trash compactor. Apple had been thrown away, and inside of that dark, stinky and cold trash slide at an apartment building in Washington, D.C. Apple shook with fear.

No one knows how long Apple had been trapped in the trash pile or even how far she had fallen. No one knows what kind of a person could be so cruel, and no one knows why someone could even carry through with such a cruel and heartless deed.

It had been the staff at the apartment complex who found Apple and reached out to animal control. Had Apple not been rescued, her last few days, her last few hours and her last few minutes would have been torturous.

And now, Apple’s story really begins. At arrival she was little more than skin over a skeleton. Her lower back, hips and knees had grown inward which changed the way she moved through her world. She was able to walk, but with every step she cried out in pain. Whoever threw her away in that trash compactor had meant for Apple to die.

Her coat was matted and her skin pulled tight from the abject neglect.

But here is the unbearable truth: Apple is joyful. Not broken. Not shut down. Joyful. She brightens at kindness. She leans into gentle hands. She receives love as if she has been waiting patiently, for someone to finally offer it.

The good news is Apple’s past has not dampened her spirit. Now she is safe and is receiving the medical care, love and support she deserves. She continues to be loved as her new life gently unfolds.

Welcome to Miri’s Haven, Apple.

The rescue specializes in senior dogs over seven years of age.

You are not trash.
