In an extraordinary battle of survival for a humpback whale nicknamed Timmy, this morning the news reported he has been released into the waters of the North Sea. Timmy swam out of the special water filled barge transport made for him under his own power.

The journey from the German coast of the Baltic Sea for Timmy, who is 40 feet long, organized by volunteers and independent donations, helped free him after he stranded himself multiple times; each time becoming more distressed and weaker.
The whale was first seen on March 3, 2026 as rescuers struggled to save him from the shallow waters far from where he should have been – in the Atlantic. It is not known why the whale ended up in the Baltic Sea. Scientists have opined the whale may have lost his way when swimming after a shoal of herring during migration.
It is not known if Timmy will ultimately survive. The colder and saltier waters off northern Europe is not what he is accustomed. It is hoped he will continue his journey back to the Atlantic Ocean, and one report stated he was headed in the right direction.
Updates to follow. Keep your fingers crossed Timmy survives.
