In Indianapolis, staff at the Peaceful Souls Animal Rescue and Recovery, had their hearts broken this week. The nonprofit organization received a call from the Indianapolis Animal Care Services regarding a stray dog they had been trying to capture for a week; she had been spotted near a local elementary school.

The dog was extremely frightened and would flee the moment anyone approached.

The staff and volunteers at Peaceful Souls Animal Rescue and Recovery headed out to help. They had been keeping track of the dog’s whereabouts for days, and when they arrived at the location, there she was sound asleep against a fence shivering from the cold.

The rescuer was able to approach, but as she got closer with a leash, the frightened dog let out a warning not to come any closer. A humane trap was set as close as possible under the nearby fence and up a hill. The delicious food bait was exactly what was needed; the dog was starving, and she was easily lured into the trap where she was finally safe.

The dog, who volunteers think might be a Tibetan Mastiff or a Leonberger, was first brought to the IACS, where the shelter staff stated she was very food motivated and sweet, but she was scared. The dog was sedated and received her first bath and examined by the staff veterinarian.

She is severely emaciated, has demodex mange and has scars and open pressure sores. Although her age is estimated to be no more than three, several of her teeth are worn down. She has been named Nova and has been started on antibiotics, antifungals, anti inflammatory and thyroid replacement medication. She is already showing much improvement, and her caretakers can see the light back in her eyes.
And there’s more. Just a few days later, no more than three miles from where Nova was found, a male appeared in a residential driveway, and the shelter was also able to capture him.

There is little doubt these two dogs are siblings, and sadly they are in similar conditions of neglect, except the male is not as badly emaciated as his sister.
Peaceful Souls Animal Rescue and Recovery have stepped up to take them both in and they happily helped transport them to what will obviously be their first taste of what a good life looks like.
