At the Humane Society of North Texas, every day pets arrive in serious condition and rely on the help of the organization’s staff and the compassion of the community.
A six-week-old kitten named Elmer has a story to tell. Recently, it had been a Good Samaritan who brought Elmer to the rescue organization after finding him stuck in a bucket of industrial adhesive. The tiny survivor was covered from ear to tail; the thick substance precluded him from eating, drinking or caring for himself.

When he arrived he was severely dehydrated and in need of life saving treatment.
The medical team immediately got to work. For hours, staff carefully and continuously used canola oil and gentle hands-on care to slowly dissolve and remove the adhesive, working methodically to keep Elmer stable and as comfortable as possible.

It wasn’t fast or easy, but it was steady, patient care that met the moment with exactly what he needed most.

And now today, Elmer’s feline adorableness is already shining through. As he recuperates, he is able to sleep, gain strength and act like a playful kitten. While he still has healing ahead because of the after effects from the glue removal, he’s already nothing short of an affectionate fur ball.

Stories like Elmer’s reflect what’s possible every day at HSNT, where urgency, expertise, and compassion turn crisis into hope.
