At the Nebraska Humane Society, a lost cat named Muffy has been reunited with her family after 15 years, thanks to her microchip. In 2011, Muffy slipped out of the family’s open garage door, and no one knew what happened to her despite a full campaign and lots of searching to find her.

On Feb. 26, 2026, a neighbor brought Muffy into the Nebraska Humane Society, believing she was a stray.
On March 1, the cat’s family received the call that their cat named Muffy was at the shelter. After all that time, the family was convinced it had to have been a mistake, but they took the chance and drove to the shelter. Once there, they confirmed the cat was indeed Muffy, and she had been missing for 15 years.
There’s no way to know what Muffy has been up to in that span, but here some positive thoughts from the animal rescue organization for everyone who has had their heart broken over a lost pet:
1. We know losing a pet is devastating. Please never give up.
2. We understand life happens and pets get loose. Please get your pets microchipped so we can more easily reunite you. We even have the perfect upcoming opportunity!
Please – no matter where you adopt or purchase your pet – get them microchipped.
Welcome home Muffy.
