Chico, an adorable black and brown wire-haired puppy was stolen last week from the Austin Humane Society. Just two days later, the four-month-old puppy was returned.

A woman who inquired about adopting Chico had been set up in a visitation room to meet the puppy. She put Chico in her purse and quickly left the facility. Contact information provided on her adoption application had been a dead end. The staff had not realized she had left with the puppy for a few minutes, but security cameras caught her leaving the facility out of a volunteer/staff only entrance.

On Thursday, the Austin Humane Society posted the good news on their Facebook page; stating the seven-pound terrier is now back in their care. The story said the dog had been returned by a friend of the woman caught on video leaving with the puppy in a canvas purse.

A handwritten note accompanied the puppy apologized for stealing the puppy.

Chico was returned in the same bag seen on the video when the woman left the shelter. The puppy has been throwing up and is under the care of the AHS veterinarian team.

Once he is healthy, he will be made available for adoption again.

It was community action that lead to the individual deciding to return Chico to the organization for which they are so grateful.

The organization will not be pressing charges as they are not sure of the woman’s identity, and because the puppy was returned.
