Dog used as lawn ornament never taught anything yet surrendered to shelter for ‘trying to escape’

In Greenville, Texas, Nelli’s future looks grim; that is unless someone comes to her rescue. For most of her three years, the very friendly Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd mix had been treated like a yard ornament.

She had been kept outside, never given any guidance, never taught anything and more than likely was just bored. She was never house trained, never allowed in her family’s home and stayed outdoors through rain, shine, cold and heat. Her family, however expected more of Nelli. They brought her to the shelter because she “wouldn’t stay on their property.”

Nelli wasn’t “bad” because she tried to leave. She had not been taught any better, nor had she had any clue that wandering off to find food or out of curiosity was not acceptable behavior.

The shelter staff describes Nelli as loving, friendly and gentle. She does well with cats, dogs, children and goats. Sadly, her reward for being failed by her humans is a kennel in an overcrowded shelter that has little choice other than humanely euthanize pets that are not quickly adopted.

Nelli has no idea why her world collapsed. She doesn’t know her life is at risk. It’s not her fault her family dumped her at the shelter as if she was disposable. Nelli deserves better.

Unfortunately, the shelter does not have a foster program.
