Abandoned at rural shelter with urgent medical needs donations, compassion and outrage saved dog’s life

At the nonprofit animal rescue organization, Hounds In Pounds, an emergency called had been received on Friday, May 8, 2026 about a dog sitting in a Georgia shelter with open, exposed wounds and in need of emergency medical treatment to save her life.

According to the shelter, Good Samaritans had discovered a dog lying in an abandoned parking lot. She was trembling, unable to get on her feet and writhing in pain. She was hanging on to life by a thread. As her rescuers got closer, they saw the chain deeply embedded and choking the life out of her body.

She wasn’t wearing a collar; just the heavy metal chain that had been there for so long that her skin had been growing over it and becoming part of her body. The chain however was choking her, and someone had never bothered to remove it. The terribly painful and dangerous condition had to have taken months – maybe longer.

She was a prisoner in something she never chose.

And someone saw this happening.

Saw it cutting deeper, day after day… and did nothing.

The shelter removed the chain, but her wounds were left exposed and subject to infection. Every move she made caused her pain, and even though the shelter did their best to clean and soothe her discomfort on a very limited budget, she needed more intensive help.

And then she was rescued by Hounds In Pounds and transported to a veterinary hospital where she was sedated under general anesthesia for the procedure and her open wounds cleaned, treated for infections and closed up. Veterinarians treating her said she was a young dog who had already been repeatedly bred. She is also heartworm positive, indicating she spent her days and nights outdoors, and someone who needed her for her puppy production, never bothered to provide her with the preventative treatments.

And now just a day later.

Meet Lulu Lavender; she is alive and doing so much better. Because of donations, compassion and the outrage on this dog’s behalf, her life has changed for the positive. She is now receiving the care she has been denied for far too long.

Lulu Lavender is recovering with Dr. Terry, receiving cold laser therapy, antibiotics, pain management and lots of love and care. She has also started heartworm treatment.

Once she is healed, she will be spayed, and the rest of her vetting will be completed.

And through all of this? Lulu Lavender is sweet, gentle, loving and so grateful to everyone who is helping her. When she is fully healed and medically cleared, she will be ready to find her forever family. She cannot be adopted until that time — but please follow along for updates as she continues to heal.
