A call for help came into the Mission Fire Department in Mission, Texas on Friday evening, June 19; and six lives depended on it.

Firefighters were dispatched following multiple reports concerning several dogs trapped inside a water-filled canal. Upon arrival, crews spotted all six dogs struggling to climb out of the steep, slippery canal walls and stay afloat.

It took teamwork, patience and determination, but all the dogs were safely rescued and brought to solid ground. Firefighters used specialized equipment and ropes to safely pull the dogs one by one up to solid ground.

The dogs are currently in the care of local animal welfare authorities.

The Mission Fire Department shared photos of the operation on their Facebook page. They publicly thanked the concerned community members who spotted the dogs and made the initial 911 call, noting that they are always ready to respond regardless of whether the emergency involves a person or a pet.

We’re thankful for the community members who made the call and for the dedication of our firefighters who never hesitate to help regardless of whether the call is for a person or a pet.
