Wildlife camera used to monitor coyotes and mountain lions unexpectedly captured stray dog fighting to survive

In Tustin, California, an emaciated dog, fighting to survive was caught on camera. Who knew? The camera had been installed in the area to monitor coyotes and mountain lions; no one expected to see a dog trying to survive in the wilderness.

It had been one of Orange County (OC) Infrastructure Program cameras installed near Red Rock Wilderness and the Loma Ridge Preserve reviewed every 30 days noting the movement of the wild animals. When authorities retrieved the footage a week ago, they saw a stray pup; she repeatedly had been seen.

When the dog, since dubbed Winona, was first spotted on the video a month prior, she looked healthy and strong. By day 32, she appeared thin, weak and clearly in need of help.

Orange County Animal Care was notified on May 29. They immediately set a humane trap complete with cozy blankets and food; some blankets and food on the outside as well as inside the trap to put the dog at ease while gaining her confidence to step inside.

Days went by as officers regularly checked, wanting to bring her to safety. And then, on June 2, there was Winona. No, she wasn’t in the trap at all; this sweet pup was curled up and snoozing on one of the blankets nearby.

Although she was covered in ticks and incredibly underweight, Winona still greeted us with gentle eyes and quiet trust.

Now safe, clean, and healing, Winona is ready for her next chapter, a loving home. Could that be with you?
