Just one week ago, on another very cold day in March, revered rescuer Donna Lochmann from Stray Rescue of St. Louis, had been on the trail of a nursing mother and her newborn puppies. She had just started searching when she turned the corner, and there he was; an injured German shepherd trying to be invisible in the corner of the pitch dark room.

Donna could smell the dog’s infection; a deeply embedded collar had become infected, and the pain had to have been nearly intolerable. Although the dog was terrified as his rescuers approached, he put his head down and allowed Donna and her team to rescue him.

They named him Kodiak.
The two-year-old German shepherd was sedated, his deeply embedded collar removed and the area shaved, washed and sutured to get rid of the infections and close the open wounds. Kodiak began to heal both emotionally and physically.

According to his rescue report, his neck wound is healing, the infection is under control, and a once very frightened and shy dog is coming out of his shell.

Of course he was frightened when he came in, he has never been touched, loved, or cared for in his whole life. He grew up with a puppy collar growing tighter around his neck every day of his life. But it took him no time at all to realize life is sooo much better now. ..
Kodiak is ready for a foster home where he can continue to heal, continue to gain self-confidence and discover how wonderful life can be when not in pain or frightened.
