In an unexpected call on Monday, April 27, to the Solano Sheriff’s Animal Control Services in Fairfield, California, officers responded to a report about a dog that had fallen into a well inside of an abandoned home. Just moments later, a call had been received from worried owners who had been searching for their lost dog for hours. The descriptions matched; it was the same dog, and the location was not far away.

When Officer Bradley arrived he could hear the distressed cries coming from a dog, but he could not locate the dog from the outside of the house. With the assistance of the Solano County Sheriff’s Office deputies, entry was granted because of urgent welfare concerns. Inside, they found the dog trapped in a cistern several feet below ground treading water.

Vallejo Fire was called in for the rescue. By this time, the owners had arrived and confirmed the dog was Fiona.
It turned out to be a challenging rescue effort because of the confined conditions. Specialized equipment and training from the Vallejo Fire Department crew were all employed, and the rescuers were successful pulling Fiona out of the well. Fiona, determined and exhausted did everything she could do to help. She fearlessly held onto a loop with her teeth and tried her best to push herself up out of the dark confines of the well.

According to the rescuers and her family, Fiona likely had been treading water for at least two hours.
Fiona suffered abrasions, was cold and extremely tired, but was reunited with her owners and taken for medical care. We’re happy to report she is now home and recovering well.
Fiona’s family is so very grateful.

That’s my dad’s baby and we are so thankful for you guys.! True miracle she is alive thankful to all the first responders and for Fiona being so brave and strong.
A huge thank you to Vallejo Fire for their quick response, expertise, and dedication—this rescue wouldn’t have been possible without them.
