Barely a day ago, an abandoned, eight-pound dog was discovered; he had been thrown away as if his life didn’t matter. Animal Control in South Carolina reached out to Hounds In Pounds for emergency help.

The dog, named Cornbread by his rescuers, had been lying in a burn pit used to dispose of trash. He had been thrown away in the once smoldering burnt debris. Fortunately, a woman who had walked over to dump her own trash spotted the dog. At first she thought he had died, but was so horrified at the sight, she called the local sheriff.
Although Cornbread’s breathing was shallow, there was no doubt he was alive. The dog was rushed to Dr. Parnell’s veterinarian hospital. At first he had been unable to even lift his head. His blood sugar was 20 (normal is 80–120). He was little more than skin and bones, fur matted to his skin, with a body score of just 2–3. But Cornbread wanted to live; he fought to take that extra breath, he ate and drank the food offered, and he loved the warm bath and gentle caresses.

Sadly, his little body could no longer fight. Despite every effort and the short painful life he undoubtedly had lived through, rescuers and vet technicians held and comforted him, and he peacefully left to walk across the Rainbow Bridge.
Many thanks to everyone for their messages, their pledges and their offers to foster Cornbread.

According to the rescue organization, there has been an alarming increase in abuse cases.
