Authorities with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) accompanied by the Humane World for Animals, rescued 47 dogs and puppies earlier this month from properties in three different areas in Chester and Lancaster counties. The dogs had been chained to barrels and other structures with little or no protection from the weather. Some of these dogs had been chained and abused for years.

According to the Humane World for Animals, the neglected dogs are currently being evaluated and treated for multiple injuries. The dogs likely had been used in an alleged dog fighting ring. Under federal law, dog fighting is illegal in the United States.

Animal advocates state the dogs used for fighting are selected and trained for violence. The dogs are forced into fighting which leaves the dogs severely traumatized. Sometimes the dogs have died because of infections, exhaustion or by human intervention because the dogs were not successful fighters.

Some of the dogs had no access to food or clean water. One dog had fresh puncture wounds over his eye, and another was limping with recent puncture wounds and swelling on his leg. Puppies as young as three weeks of age, were found with their mom living outside in a hutch.
Our team found dogs chained, injured, hungry, scarred… yet still wagging tails when compassion arrived. Veterinary exams revealed many dogs had been suffering with infected puncture wounds, severe dental disease, heavy flea infestations and more.
Now, they’re all safe at a confidential location, receiving the veterinary care, love and time they need to heal.
The operation has been part of a series or investigations that have helped to rescue about 90 dogs from multiple sites within the last few months.
