The Animal Cruelty Taskforce for the Missouri Humane Society rescued 97 Labrador Retrievers from an unlicensed breeder in Phelps County, Missouri. This was not the first time visiting this property; 83 dogs had been removed from this “Horrible 100” list breeder in late 2019 and early 2020.

The 97 dogs included both adults and puppies, and they will need all the medical care and love that can be provided. The unlicensed kennel Sho-Me Labradors is owned by Sandra Kozlowski, according to the animal rescue group.

The Missouri Humane Society’s Facebook stated Kozlowski had repeatedly refused recent inspections and had been operating without a license since Jan. 31, 2022. During an inspection last August, “state officials found approximately 20 violations, including large dogs kept in small cramped wire crates without consistent access to water.”

All of the dogs are now safe and warm and are being attended to by the shelter staff.

For everyone who wants to help:

To donate, go to hsmo.org/rescue. If you are local, the rescue would love donations of blankets, towels, toys and newspapers; the shelter staff will put them to good use. They also have an Amazon wish list for anyone who is too far away to come visit but still want to help.

Many people wanted to know how to bring about change when it comes to regulations that surround breeders and puppy mills in the state of Missouri. The rescue is working with the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation, an organization that is devoted to bringing about legislative change for animals. They are an excellent resource for anyone wanting to learn more about animal rights in Missouri.

Please note, the dogs are not ready for adoption yet, but when they are available, the organization will post them to their adoptable pets page: hsmo.org/adopt.
