When we meet Lambeau, we just smile; here’s a gorgeous five-year-old German shepherd who loves people and other dogs. We watch how well he gets along with other dogs on the playground at the City of San Bernardino Animal Services, and we smile when we watch how happy he is as he runs around just delighting in the sunshine of another beautiful day.
Then the sadness takes over. Lambeau, this beautiful and friendly German shepherd, has been placed on the euthanasia list for one reason – he’s been at the shelter too long. Apparently, the shelter is working at keeping dogs, no matter how young, how beautiful and how charming, at a maximum of 60 days before having to make the decision to euthanize. And yes, the shelters are overcrowded, and no, there are not enough people fostering or adopting.
Lambeau weighs 75 pounds and came into the shelter as a stray. He waited and waited for his family to come and find him, but they never showed up. And now, through no fault of his own, this beautiful dog is scheduled to die.
