In the southern part of Orange County, California, a young dog had been abandoned on Friday; he had been left tied to a mailbox. It was 3:30 in the morning, and there he was – left wrapped and tangled around a stranger’s mailbox all alone.

I wanted to love you forever, love you unconditionally, give all of myself to you, lay down my life for you … protect you and hoped you would do the same for me.

Suzette Hall as the voice for Hercules

No doubt the dog, who has since been named Hercules, wondered if he had been loveable or good enough? After all, why would anyone abandon him? On second thought, perhaps he barked too much, cried too much or was just annoying?

I watched as you wrapped the long cable tie line around a strange house’s mailbox and wondered why we were stopping here.

At this time of night, predators roamed the countryside, and what an easy target – tied up and tangled to a pole he would be. Hercules couldn’t understand why his human would place him in danger or leave him alone to fend for himself in an almost impossible position and situation.

So confused, sad and very, very, very scared. I heard dogs barking all around me; they were scared for me too.

And Hercules tried his best to reassure himself his owner would soon return and to be patient. He worked his best to pull out the courage and trust in his “person” who this dog loved with all his heart and loyalty. He just kept thinking he and his human were partners – through thick and thin each would do the best for one another because they were tied by love.

Sadly, Hercules’ human never returned, but rescuers in the neighborhood arrived and were surprised to see the dog trembling in fear, confused and tied up. At first, the women were afraid to approach the dog; he was afraid of them also.

They tried feeding me treats but my tummy was in knots, and i could not think about eating. I could not think about moving. I felt paralyzed in my fear, longing for my person to please come back for me.

And then Suzette Hall, founder of  Logan’s Legacy 29 arrived later that morning. She kneeled down slowly and was so quiet and calm, that Hercules sensed she had been trying to help. She gently removed the cable from around his body and placed a slip lead around his neck. Even with the gentle pulling however, Hercules refused to move; he would be loyal and wait for his person to return. No one was going to talk him out of that no matter how insistent they could be.

He never came back and that was days ago. I was depressed and confused for a few days, but the nice lady told me she shared me everywhere that a responsible owner would be looking. Yet no one has come to claim me as their beloved.

Hercules has since been fully vetted, bathed and de-matted and has been meeting with potential foster homes. He loves going on car rides, walks and enjoys meeting new friends. He is good on a leash, is mellow with spurts of energy and is good with other dogs as long as they approach slowly and calmly.

The ideal foster home will have secure fencing, one other dog or no dogs, has a member of the household who is home part of the day and someone who has experience with dogs.
