In County Longford, Ireland, a tearful procession of mourners, including a loyal dog named Bessie, followed behind a hearse carrying the remains of his loving owner, Margo Magan. Margo, 94, died peacefully on December 30, 2022.

We said our final goodbye to our remarkable mum Margo at 94. She loved her dog. Mother of 12, Champion swimmer, holder of many titles/records. top golfer, 1st female president of a golf club in Ireland. Active until recently having swam Xmas day 3 years ago. Legend.

According to the Mirror, Margo’s grandniece, Tamara Gervasoni took the poignant photo of Bessie following the casket on the way to Killashee Cemetery for burial after a funeral Mass at church last week.

Dogs mourn much like people. Often they become depressed and listless and may lose their appetite and sleep for longer periods of time. Still, dogs’ emotions remain a mystery to us, but many of us have read or seen examples of dogs lying on the recently buried graves of their once beloved owners. An ASPCA study from 2013, stated two-thirds of dogs experience lethargy and loss of appetite after another dog in the household dies.

A dog’s feelings can only be surmised through their behavior, and of course is open to interpretation. Who can forget the infamous story of Hachiko, the Akita from Japan who walked to and from the local train station every day to meet his owner for ten years after his beloved human had died?

Feel free to tell us about your experiences with dogs grieving.

  1. I HAVE FOUND THAT DOGS GRIEVE HARDER AND LONGER THAN MOST PEOPLE DO! THIS SUFFERING SWEETHEART WILL NEED TWO OR THREE TIMES AS MUCH LOVE TO EASE THE PAIN!
