Puppy about to lose his life for being ‘too active’ while his family failed him

Meet a cute little nine-month-old bundle of energy and cuteness named Fifty. At Manhattan’s New York City Animal Care Centers, Fifty has been scheduled to die. His owners surrendered him to the shelter because he was “too active” and obviously never spent the time or taught him basic puppy manners.

Yes, Fifty is a 41-pounds mouthy, exuberant at play, jumps up, plays tug with his leash puppy; all of what add up to being a puppy with few boundaries. And let’s face it; is it not the job of a puppy’s owner to teach him?

And how sad is this? Fifty has been listed four times for adoption, and not one person in this huge city of New York has stepped up to help him?

This is what we know about Fifty:

1. He is 9-months old, neutered male who lived with one adult and two children and would sleep with one of them all night.
2. As to strangers, Fifty is outgoing and friendly, although his play is at times rough.
3. Around children he is relaxed and playful, although as previously mentioned, he can play rough.
4. How he feels about other dogs and cats is not known.
5. He is housetrained on potty pads and occasionally has accidents.

 Now we have a poor puppy facing his death because of his parent’s utter incompetence. Where was his basic puppy training – leash manners for one, and teaching him commands for another – Down and Place so his high energy could be redirected in a positive way and he would remain calm when he got a bit over the top? And trying to shove him in a crate instead of making the crate a positive, safe space? Maybe ending up at the shelter was the best thing for this boy?

According to shelter notes, Fifty is on emergency placement for behavioral reasons. He has displayed increased shelter, stress, deterioration and arousal – mouthing hard, grabbing clothing, and has difficulty settling. He is often still social with familiar shelter caretakers. Medically, he has Alopecia.
