It truly is a heartbreaking story the Monmouth County SPCA in New Jersey shared on social media Tuesday concerning a sweet senior Rottweiler named Coco, and the abject neglect she had to have suffered during the Christmas holidays.

When the pipes froze at Coco’s former home, her humans left, but instead of making sure Coco was warm, safe and fed, they tethered her to a short chain outside on a concrete pad. She had no protection from the weather and no food or water. For three nights, Coco spent suffering in below freezing temperatures; the poor girl was alone, hungry, cold and confused.

Fortunately, Coco was found by officers from the Neptune Police who immediately alerted the Monmouth County SPCA Animal Control Division. Help was soon on the way.

Coco was finally safe, and she was brought to the shelter where she was warmed up, fed, given water and provided with a comfortable place to rest. Bloodwork performed later showed she may have kidney stones as well as a genetic eye condition that affects her vision; likely the result of careless breeding.

Coco is very friendly, gentle, loyal and has already won the hearts of the staff and volunteers. She will be monitored and treated as needed.

Coco’s owners are now facing two charges of animal cruelty:

  1. Cruel Restraint
  2. Failure to Provide Necessary Care

At this time, the owners have not surrendered Coco to the SPCA, however anyone interested in giving this girl a home, is asked to keep an eye on social media by clicking here.
